1. Installation
----------------

Program Installation (if you have a hard disk system):

The following assumes that your floppy disk is the "A" drive
and your hard disk is the "C" drive. Substitute the actual
drive letters if your configuration differs.

Insert the 3048A Option 301 distribution disk in your "A"
drive. Log on to the A drive by typing "A:" (do not type the
quotes and terminate it by typing the "Enter" key).

Type "INSTALL C" (again, do not type the quotes and terminate
it by typing the "Enter" key).

The installation program will transfer all of the files from
your floppy disk to the \3048 directory on your hard disk. If
the \3048 directory did not exist, it will be created. Note:
parameter and result files in an existing \3048 directory will
be overwritten, but configuration and calibration files will
          not.

Refer to the Installation Guide and Operating Manual for
information on how to start and run the programs.

Program Installation (if you have a floppy disk system):

This 3048A Option 301 software will execute from the
distribution disk on a floppy disk drive system using 1.2 MB
or larger capacity diskettes. However, a backup copy of the
distribution disk should be made and the distribution disk
should be safeguarded. The floppy disk installation process
consists of making a copy of the distribution disk.

The following assumes that you have two floppy disk drives:
"A" and "B". Substitute the actual drive letters if your
configuration differs. If you have only one floppy disk drive
you will need to use the MS-DOS command "DISKCOPY" to make
the backup copy of your distribution disk. (In that case,
refer to your MS-DOS manual for instructions on DISKCOPY.)

Insert the 3048A distribution disk in your "A" drive.

Insert a blank, formatted disk in the "B" drive. If
necessary, refer to your MS-DOS manual to format the disk.

Type "COPY A:*.* B:" (do not type the quotes and terminate it
          by typing the "Enter" key.

All of the files from your distribution floppy disk will now
be copied to the root directory on your "B" floppy disk. You
should then safeguard the distribution disk and use the new
copy that you have just made.

If upgrading from an earlier version, it will be necessary to
copy all of your existing *.PRM, *.RES, *.CAL and *.CFG files
to the floppy disk copy that you have just made.

There are two important things to remember when running this
software on a floppy disk. First, the floppy disk must remain
inserted in its drive at all times; it cannot be removed once
the program starts. Second, if less than 256KB of EMS is
available, the floppy disk must have at least 256KB of free
disk space. (See Memory Usage below).

Refer to the Installation Guide and Operating Manual for
information on how to start and run the programs.

     Other Installation:

If printed copies of the graphs produced by this software are
desired, you will need to install the GRAFPLUS utility that is
included with this package on a seperate disk. Refer to the
Installation Guide and the GRAFPLUS documentation for
          assistance.

If you are using the National GPIB card, you will need to
install it and its software. Refer to the card's
          documentation for installation assistance.

If you are using the Hewlett-Packard HPIB card, you will only
need to install the card; there is no additional software
installation. Refer to the card's documentation for
          installation assistance.

2. Important Information
-------------------------

     National Instruments GPIB Card:

When using the National Instruments GPIB card (or starting
PN.EXE or CAL.EXE with the /N command line parameter), it is
normal for the program to report a SYSTEM ERROR "xxxxx not
found in IBCONF table" as the program starts. This can occur
when the Interface entry in the configuration table is not
correct. It is necessary to type "P" at the "Proceed / Abort"
prompt in order to continue; "A" will not abort. Enter the
configuration table (with the System Configuration /
Instrument Addresses commands) and correct the entry for the
          Interface.

     Memory Usage:

The software requires at least 384K of free RAM memory. If an
excessive amount of memory is consumed by TSRs (Terminate and
Stay Resident programs), device drivers, network drivers,
etc. are loaded, there may not be enough free memory, even if
your system has 640K of RAM.

In addition, the PN.EXE program uses a system of overlays that
are "swapped" in and out of memory as required. This is
transparent to the user of the software and requires no
special attention except that 256K of EMS (expanded)
memory or extended memory is used if available. PN.EXE first
attempts to use EMS; it uses extended memory if no EMS is
          available.

Due to the lack of standardization of allocating extended
memory, in rare circumstances it is possible that the
allocation method used by PN.EXE will not detect another
application that is already using extended memory and conflict
with it. If you wish, you may run PN.EXE with the
undocumented command line option that forces swapping to disk
instead of EMS or extended memory: PN /D

If EMS or extended memory is not available, the program disk
is used for the swap space and the program will run somewhat
slower. Program speed will be even slower if the program disk
is a floppy disk (instead of a hard disk). Remember that the
floppy disk (if used) must remain inserted in the drive and
the floppy disk must have at least 256K available space if
          disk swapping is taking place.

3. Corrections to the Manuals
------------------------------

Refer to the addendum sheets that accompany your manuals for the
latest information about changes, corrections, and updates.

To print in color on a PAINTJET printer with GRAFPLUS version 5.22
     and 5.24:

[1] Follow the instructions in the installation manual up to
"EXITING" from the 'printer driver' menu. From this menu you
must "5) Edit the entire driver". This editor allows you to
modify approximately 31 commands for the printer. All but one
can be left unchanged for color printing. When given the
choice for "How many colors are to be printed (1 or 4)?",
          choose '4'.

[2] Exit this editor by hitting "Enter" until you have
scrolled through all of the commands.

[3] Press '7' to exit and 'y' to save the modifications.

[4] Return to the installation instructions for loading
          GRAFPLUS.

4. Files on the Distribution Disk
----------------------------------

README - This file; information that may not be in the manuals.

INSTALL.BAT - An MS-DOS batch file that "installs" the 3048A software
on your hard disk by copying the appropriate files.
                      Type INSTALL ? for help.
     MAKEDIR.EXE - Used by INSTALL.BAT; makes a disk directory.

PN.EXE - The phase noise measurement system program.
CAL.EXE - The phase noise system calibration program.

HIGHDATA.CAL - Calibration data produced by CAL.EXE and needed to
LOWDATA.CAL run PN.EXE. These two files are unique to the
HP 11848A Phase Noise Interface and are not
                      interchangeable with others.

DEFAULT.CFG - Configuration file needed by PN.EXE and CAL.EXE. It
contains information about your screen colors,
graph colors, instrument types, and instrument
HPIB addresses. This file is an example file and
                      is identical to HP.CFG.
HP.CFG - An example configuration file using the Hewlett-Packard
HPIB card. You can use it as a template for DEFAULT.CFG
                      by copying it to DEFAULT.CFG.
NATL.CFG - An example configuration file using the National
Instruments GPIB card. You can use it as a template
for DEFAULT.CFG by copying it to DEFAULT.CFG.

LASTPRMS.PRM - Parameters for the last completed measurement. Loaded
automatically when the program is started.
DEFAULT.PRM - Parameters loaded if LASTPRMS.PRM is not found. Loaded
automatically when the program is started (if necessary).
*.PRM - Various factory-supplied measurement parameter files.

LASTMEAS.RES - results of the last measurement completed. Loaded
automatically when the program is started.
DEFAULT.RES - Factory-supplied sample results file that can be loaded if
                      if desired.
